This recipe uses just three natural ingredients you can easily find online or at most grocery stores. Here’s what you’ll need:
1. Citric Acid
Citric acid helps break down hard water spots, removes buildup, and gives your dishes that squeaky-clean finish. It also acts as a natural preservative in the mix.
→ Shop my favorite citric acid here
2. Baking Soda
Good old baking soda works as a gentle abrasive to lift stuck-on food and neutralize odors.
→ Here’s the one I keep stocked in my pantry
3. Washing Soda
Washing soda (different from baking soda!) is a powerful cleanser and helps cut through grease. It’s a natural water softener that boosts cleaning power.

How to Make DIY Non-Toxic Dishwasher Detergent
Ingredients:
- 1 cup citric acid
- 2 cups baking soda
- 4 cups washing soda
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients until well combined.
- Store the powder in an airtight container (I use a glass jar with a scoop for easy access).
- Use about 1 tablespoon per load of dishes.
That’s it! Seriously, it doesn’t get easier.
Tip: If you live in an area with very hard water, you can add a splash of distilled white vinegar as a rinse aid in your dishwasher’s rinse compartment for extra sparkle.
